The Colorado Avalanche are a NHL professional hockey franchise based in Denver, Colorado. The Avalanche were founded in 1979 as the Quebec Nordiques and were moved to Colorado in 1995. The Avalanche have won two Stanley Cup championships, one in 1996 and the other in 2001. They are the only NHL team in history to win a Stanley Cup in their first season in existance.
